25th Anniversary of Baptist Archives at C-N

The Mildred L. Iddins Special Collections is proud to announce the 25th Anniversary of the Baptist Archives! In 1986 Carson-Newman was commissioned along with Belmont University and Union University to maintain a collection of materials documenting Baptist history for their respective regions. Over the years our collections have grown through the efforts of numerous people including Rev. Glenn A. Toomey, former Archivist Sue Lynn McGuire and Librarian Emeritus Imogene Brewer. In October of 1999 the renovated Baptist Archives was dedicated during the Founders' Day chapel.

In 2007 Belmont University broke ties with the Tennessee Baptist Convention and their collection was returned and placed in storage. This past year we asked for and received permission from the TBC to be the repository for this material, enabling Carson-Newman to now house the East and Middle Tennessee Baptist Archives. We are grateful to Dwayne King and David Henderson for making the trip to Brentwood to pick up and deliver these wonderful records.

As a “faith based” archives, we believe that in preserving materials documenting the history of Carson-Newman and Baptists, we are keeping a record of God’s work in the lives of His people. As David wrote in Psalm 22:30, “Posterity will serve him; future generations will be told about the Lord.”

Special thanks go to Susanne Cate and Charles Key for the wonderful logo they desgined for our collection.

What a great selection of photographs capturing primarily the Southern States (although there are a few stray photos from Wyoming, Montana, Missouri, and Vermont)! Wolcott was a photographer for the Farm Services Administration in the 1930s and 1940s, and these photographs were selected by the Library of Congress as part of the Fields of Vision series that showcases the work of individual photographers in that project. I loved the old painted signs on buildings, the glimpses into the home life of persons such as the photograph of a North Carolina woman in her kitchen, the old court docket book from Granville County, North Carolina, the painted advertisements on buildings such as the one in Natchez, Mississippi, the people hard at work, and the photos of children enjoying life. I could go on and on.

Here is some information regarding our newest e-books!

One of our e-book collections, ACLS Humanities E-Book, will add almost 550 titles to the collection in 2011. They have rescheduled the release and it is now taking place in two stages: the first release of 250 has just gone live; the second release, with the remaining titles, will take place in late May or early June. The list of all these forthcoming titles in spreadsheet format is now available online at: http://www.humanitiesebook.org/titlelist.html. (Catalog records will be available for the complete set of titles in late May, and will be added to our online catalog at that time.) HEB’s eighth round of new titles includes 542 electronic books covering a wide range of disciplines and fields. Among the most prominent new additions are another 141 titles in Film and Media Studies, 46 more in Philosophy, 57 in Central and Eastern European Studies, 41 in Music and Musicology, 33 in Jewish Studies, as well as 29 more in Bibliography and 30 in Linguistics and Literature. With these new additions HEB will retain its core concentrations in History and expand strong collections in Women’s Studies (254 titles total), Literature (138), Music and Musicology (127), Latin American Studies (114), Middle Eastern (112) and Mediterranean-Byzantine Studies (67), and Methods and Theory (84), among other fields across the Humanities.

The Invisible Bridge - by Julie Orringer

This book has been on my "wish list" to read ever since we obtained it via our lease book program last year. It is longlisted for the prestigious Orange Prize for fiction. I decided it was time to read it.

Andras Levi, a Hungarian Jew, manages to secure a chance to study architecture in France. This book chronicles his time in France and his brother's chance to study medicine in Italy. Then they lose their student visas and must return home. The hardships suffered by them and by their families are chronicled in the book. I was a bit intimidated by the size of this book -- almost 600 pages, but I need not have worried. Orringer is a very skillful storyteller and kept my attention throughout the entire book. The characters are well drawn. The atrocities suffered by the Jews during the Holocaust are never easy to read, so be prepared to shed a few tears. I am impressed by the amount of research that the author must have done to write such a marvelous piece of historical fiction. 5 stars.

By the way, the library has three other Orange Prize nominees for this year on our Lease Book shelves: Room by Emma Donoghue, Great House by Nicole Krauss, and The Tiger's Wife by Téa Obreht.

The U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) opened its doors on March 4, 1861, the same day President Abraham Lincoln took the oath of office. Today, exactly one hundred and fifty years later, GPO marks a milestone by celebrating 150 years of producing and delivering Government information to Congress, Federal agencies, and the American public. While GPO's past has been about printing, its present and future are being defined by digital information technologies.

To honor the occasion, some members of Congress have recognized GPO today, which has been recorded in the Congressional Record. Representative Robert A. Brady of Pennsylvania honored GPO by saying:

"The work of the GPO is so fundamental to our work that we frequently lose sight of all the services they actually provide. We like to say that all congressional information is on the Internet, but many of us don't seem to know that it's the GPO that puts that information online on its site, GPO Access, and now on the successor site, FDsys . . . . Benjamin Franklin and the Founding Fathers would be surprised and pleased by what the GPO is and does today. On behalf of all us in this House who daily rely and depend on the products and Services the GPO provides, I say congratulations and best wishes to Public Printer Bill Boarman and the men and women of the United States Government Printing Office, and convey our thanks and deepest appreciation for all their hard work."

From the Senate, Senator Harry Reid from Nevada congratulated GPO by saying:

"Since [1861] GPO has used ever changing technologies to produce and deliver government information for Congress, Federal agencies, and the public. GPO plays a vital role in providing the printed and electronic documents necessary for Congress to conduct its legislative business."

On our anniversary, GPO would like to extend its thanks to Federal depository libraries. The Economic Report of the President, 2011 is now available from the U.S. Government Printing Office. It is issued by the Executive Office of the President and the Council of Economic Advisers and transmitted to Congress no later than ten days after the submission of the Budget of the United States Government. The Economic Report of the President is available from GPO's Federal Digital System at: http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/browse/collectionGPO.action?collectionCode=ERP. Documents are available in ASCII text and Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF), with many of the tables also available for separate viewing and downloading as spreadsheets in Microsoft Excel (XLS).

The Economic Report of the President includes:

1. Current and foreseeable trends and annual numerical goals concerning topics such as employment, production, real income, and Federal budget outlays;

2. Employment objectives for significant groups of the labor force;

Also included is the Annual Report of the Council of Economic Advisers.

Donald Rumsfeld

Donald Rumsfeld, the former Secretary of Defense, has written a new book entitled, Known and Unknown. In conjunction with that new book release, he has created a web site entitled The Rumsfield Papers. It's a work in progress. Priority has been given to the works he cited in his memoir. The document library contains hundreds of declassified or previously unreleased documents.

Final Report of the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission

Published by the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission, The Financial Crisis Inquiry Report investigates the causes of the financial and economic crisis of 2007-2010.

On May 20, 2009, President Obama signed into law an Act that established the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission to "examine the causes, domestic and global, of the current financial and economic crisis in the United States." During the course of its investigation, the ten person bipartisan committee reviewed millions of pages of documents, interviewed more than 700 witnesses, and held 19 days of public hearings in New York, Washington, D.C., and communities across the country that were hit hard by the crisis.

The final report presents the Commission's findings and conclusions and also contains 126 pages of dissenting views. The Commission terminates sixty days following the release of its final report.

My Reading Life by Pat Conroy

Pat Conroy's love affair with books began with his mom's love for literature. A high school English teacher also had a profound influence on him in his early years. In this book, Pat Conroy shares his lifelong love affair with reading. He shares with his readers some of the books that influenced his life, some of the people that called attention to books, and to his encounters with others in the book business -- fellow authors and persons more involved in the publishing aspect. Anyone who aspires to be a writer needs to read this book. Persons studying Conroy's works will find a greater appreciation of them by knowing something of Conroy's life and the extent to which he employed his own life in his work. I've missed reading a few of the classics mentioned by the author as being influential in his own life, and his praise for them makes me want to read these. I've already downloaded a free copy of one of these works to my Kindle application. This is, perhaps, the highest form of praise that I can demonstrate. 4.5 stars.

Major Pettigrew's Last Stand by Helen Simonson

Widower Major Ernest Pettigrew lives in the little village of Edgecombe St. Mary. He enjoys his friendship with the widowed Pakistani grocer Jasmina Ali who shares his love for literature. This is a wonderful novel that explores race and prejudice, social customs, inheritance, generation gap, religious differences, and much more. It's a wonderful read with characters you love as well as a few that anger you. Edgecombe St. Mary is an interesting village that most readers will feel they wish they could visit. This book did not disappoint. 4.5 stars.

This book is available on our Lease Books shelf. It has also been named one of the top books of 2010 by Amazon.com and others. Some have described this as an adult coming of age story.

New Resource for Gulf Oil Spill

Published by the National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling, Deep Water: The Gulf Oil Disaster and the Future of Offshore Drilling offers the American public and policymakers alike the fullest account available of what happened on April 20, 2010 when the Macondo well blew out. The explosion cost the lives of 11 men and initiated the catastrophe that sank the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig that spilled nearly 5 million barrels of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico. The spill disrupted an entire region's economy, damaged fisheries and critical habitats, and brought vividly to light the risks of deepwater drilling for oil and gas.

The Commission's final report explains why the well blew out and proposes actions--changes in company behavior, reform of Government oversight, and investments in research and technology--required as the industry moves forward to meet the nation's energy needs.

On November 29, 2010, the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis announced the launching of "a new web site to help the public easily track and comment on the rules being written as part of the implementation of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act." The Dodd Frank Act Regulatory Reform Rules website can be found at http://www.stlouisfed.org/rrr/ and includes or will include the proposed and final rules from all 11 agencies involved in the Dodd-Frank Act rule making process with links to the latest updates, proposed and final rules (with chronological tables), open for comment rules (with a way to submit them), and general agency or regulatory reform sites (resources).

The site has some similarities to the American Bankers Association site called ABA Dodd-Frank Tracker located at http://regreformtracker.aba.com/. Both sites are linked on LLSDC's Legislative Source Book Home page (http://www.llsdc.org/sourcebook/) right under the link to a legislative history of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act.

We have recent titles by some of your favorite authors such as Anne Perry and Debbie Macomber as well as classics like A Christmas Carol and A Visit from St. Nicholas. Be sure to stop in before you leave for Thanksgiving Break, and check out a book that you can read "just for fun." Most Christmas books are shorter than traditional books and give you just enough of a fun diversion before the stressful exam period in December!

"Homeless" Outside the Library

Many public libraries have homeless persons who spend their days in the library, particularly during the cooler winter months. Some Carson-Newman students are experiencing homelessness through a sponsored event. Some have chosen to camp out on the lawn by the Maples wing of the library. Students are still expected to attend classes, which is why these boxes are empty at the moment.

Heritage Quest Training

Are you interested in genealogical research? Are you a budding historian? Heritage Quest is a database that Carson-Newman offers that helps these groups. Heritage Quest offers access to images of U.S. census records and has some of these indexed. They have over 28,000 local and family histories in their collection. They offer access to PERSI, a periodical index produced by Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne, Indiana, that indexes many genealogy and history magazines, newsletters, and journals. You'll often locate transcribed records or indexes and abstracts of records by searching its contents. Heritage Quest also offers selected Revolutionary War pension records and bounty-land warrant application files. If you are interested in African-American research, you can search for persons in the Freedman's Bank records. You can even look for memorials, petitions, and private relief actions submitted to the U.S. Congress which are in the U.S. Serial Set.

If you are affiliated with Carson-Newman, you may be interested in webinars on the use of Heritage Quest being offered by the Tennessee Electronic Library on March 16 and March 18, 2010. Beginner and advanced workshops are being offered. You must register in advance.

The 2008 edition of the United States Government Policy and Supporting Positions, commonly known as the Plum Book, is now available from the U.S. Government Printing Office.

Alternately prepared after each Presidential election by the Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs and the House Committee on Government Reform, the Plum Book provides comprehensive information on thousands of Federal civil service leadership and support positions in the legislative and executive branches of the Federal Government that may be subject to noncompetitive appointment, nationwide. It provides a current list of data, which includes the following major categories of
positions:

* Executive Schedule and salary-equivalent positions paid at the rates established for levels I through V of the Executive Schedule;
* Senior Executive service "General" positions;
* Senior Foreign Service positions;
* Schedule C positions excepted from the competitive service by the President, or by the Director, Office of Personnel Management, because of the confidential or policy-determining nature of the position duties;
* Other positions at the GS-14 and above level excepted from the competitive service by law because of the confidential or policy-determining nature of the position duties.

The Plum Book also provides information on SES appointments.
Additionally, appendices provide information on the positions listed and the Federal salary schedules under which they are paid.

The digital version is available on GPO Access at <http://www.gpoaccess.gov/plumbook/2008/index.html>. It has been made available in its entirety, as a single PDF file. GPO has refined the
2008 Plum Book by adding bookmarks to it and optimizing it for the web.

United States Census, 1790-1930 - You can view images of all U.S. Census Records (population schedule). Indexing for all years is not complete.

Books - There are 22,000 family and local histories in the collection.

PERSI - This is an index to genealogical and historical society publications created by Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Many of these items are very pricy when ordered by Interlibrary Loan; however, you can directly request up to 6 articles at a time from Allen County Public Library for $7.50 plus a per page surcharge.

Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty-Land Warrant Applications - These are selected records.

Freedman's Bank Records - An index to records for the bank which served African-Americans from 1865-1874.

U.S. Serial Set - An index to memorials, petitions, and and private relief actions of Congress.

You should be able to locate this on the A-Z database list and be able to use the off-campus remote authentication for it.

Guard Deployment

The Defense Science Board has posted a new report on the Deployment of Members of the National Guard and Reserves in the Global War on Terror.

The task force examined the question of optimal length and frequency of deployment of members of the National Guard and reserve. According to the report, the task force found "that there is a general consensus that the guidelines for the reserve components satisfy their needs for predictability and sustainability. However, given current levels of operational demand, today's Army active National Guard, and reserve force structure will not support DoD's policy. Nor can it be supported when planned increases in end-strength are reached."

The report also expressed concern about the availability of Guard and reserve personnel and equipment to meet homeland security, civil support and domestic emergency requirements along with the robust overseas deployments.

Throughout history, the Bible has been subject to banning and burning. Between 1926 and 1956, the Bible was banned in the Soviet Union. Myanmar (formerly Burma) has banned translation of the Bible into the country's indigenous languages. Distribution of Bibles is banned in Saudi Arabia. Certain translations of the Bible have been banned by various Christian groups throughout the centuries. The Gideons' Bible distribution has been banned by some American school districts. According to one source, it has even been banned in residence halls at the University of Edinburgh because it is discriminatory. (The original article link no longer works.)

Question: Which book was burned at the East Saint Louis (Illinois) Public Library and barred from the Buffalo Public Library in 1939 because of the presence of vulgar language? The novel was even banned in Kern County, California which was the setting for the novel that same year. The book has been challenged in school systems such as Kanawha, Iowa; Richford, Vermont; Anniston, Alabama; Carthage, North Carolina; and Greenville, South Carolina over the years for reasons including the language and even the portrayal of a former clergyman who took advantage of a young woman.

Needle and ThREAD

One More Stitch, a needlework shop in Morristown, has joined with Funk & Weber Designs' challenge to needlework shops throughout the country. The challenge to is to provide hand-stitched bookmarks for children. It's being called Needle and ThREAD: Stitching for Literacy. Bookmarks collected at One More Stitch will be donated to the Morristown Children's Library on November 12 for Children's Book Week. If you cross-stitch and would like to join in this great project, you can drop completed bookmarks off at One More Stitch or at our library by November 9. Our technical services librarian, Lori Thornton, will see that they get to One More Stitch on November 10.
